Formal planning

For the past few days me and some other girls have been planning formal, weve made lots of cool stuff out of paper.
We made paper flowers, mushrooms, butterflys and stars.
We made a poster saying "yr 8 formal 2021" and each piece of card has  letter/number and then we laminated them too.

Today we are decorating the hall with evrything we made and some other decorations that we baught, there are alos some decorations from Chisnallwood, they gave us some really cool glittery stars and lightning bolts, some guitars and they were all amde of wood wich is good too.
We were originally gonna do formal at youth alive but because of covid unfortunatly we can't.
But I guess its lucky that we have a formal at all.

Maths

In Maths we have been doing these games called booklet its a really fun game.

You can make the games about anything for Maths we make them about Maths and we did on for Te Reo Maori too.  There really fun the goal of the game is to get as much candy as you can the person with most candies wins.  Its kind of similar to kahoot but honestly I think its funner.

In Maths weve also been learning about equivalent fractions and simplified fractions, a simplified fraction is a fraction that is bigger and can be simplified to make it lower. Eg: 10/16 can be simplified into 5/8. And an equivalent are fractions that have different numbers but are worth the same amount. Eg: 3/5 and 6/10 those areequivalent fractions.

Camp 2021

 - Success When we were at Camp the first activity my group did was shelter building. It was really fun, we had to climb up a hill and build a shelter on the hill by only using the things around us.  We had to use sticks, pine needles, pine cones, and logs.  Since we were on a hill it wouldn't stand up so we leaned it against a tree.  Our shelter looked really cool and it was even waterproof, because the instructor poured water on it and it barely leaked on us.  Our group vs another group and my group won, our shelter was the best!

- Engaged

At camp I felt involved, because I felt I did a fair amount in all the activities, my favourite activities were high ropes, shelter building and orienteering.  They were very fun, I really enjoyed orienteering. I felt very engaged in it because I helped write down all the different signs and each sign that we found was worth a certain amount of points, and if I lost it then we would have lost.

It was one of my favorite activities because I made a new friend and we got to go on a big adventure together.

- Empathy

I showed empathy by encouraging my group in high ropes, I encouraged them to keep going and not give up, and try to step a bit out of their comfort zone, I also showed empathy by helping and supporting my friend when she felt homesick.

- Belonging

I felt like I belonged at camp because I really enjoyed myself and I had fun with my friends, and I tried new things that I didn't know I could do or I would even enjoy.

When you belong you feel happy and you can have fun.  I’m really glad I went to camp. I think it was a great experience and we tried lots of new and great things that will come in handy. For example if we got lost in the woods or a forest and we had to build a shelter for the night or a fire.

Camp was really fun!

We also have formal, which i'm very excited for.

We also have the year 8 speeches were we say goodbye to the year 8s, I’m a bit nervous for that.

Te Ao Maori

In Te Ao Maori we have been doing weaving and last week we made a little basket in pairs, me and my partner didn't finish ours but most of the group didn't either.  The first part was really easy, where we made the base of it you kind of just cris crossed it, I don't really know how to explain it.  The last part was really confusing though.

Science

In science we have been learning about climate change and space.  Weve also been learning about how in the future we might have to live on a different planet.  We found out that there was a planet that would take 26 million years to get to, and we would have to freeeze ourselves while we were going there, so that when we got there we wouldn't have aged.

Its a bit scary to think that it might happen one day.

Why is Lockdown so important?

 Why is Lockdown so important?

Lockdown is important because at the moment as you probably know there is a massive global pandemic happening, it is called Covid 19.  It is a terrible virus happening across the world where 1000s of people have died.  It is kind of like a cold but much worse and very contagious.

The symptoms of Covid 19 are,

  • A fever of at least 38℃

  • A yucky cough

  • Sore throat

  • Shortness of breath

  • Sneezing and runny nose

  • Temporary loss of smell or taste

To stop this horrible virus the government of New Zealand has decided to put the whole country in lockdown for a few weeks.  Lockdown is when everyone has to stay inside until lockdown is over.  You are only allowed to leave your home if you have to get food or any type of necessary items and to exercise.  It is very important to go outside for a bit during this lockdown, because it is quite a depressing and miserable time for everyone and going outside is good. There is a vaccine for the virus, you can still get the virus but you won’t get sick, 1000s of people around New Zealand have taken the vaccine.

Lockdown is for our own good.   We need it so we can all stop this virus, we have done it before and we can do it again!  I know that this is a very difficult time for everyone, but just remember that this is for our own good and hopefully it will all be over soon.

Maths

The past few days in math we have been learning how to use a protractor, at the startI didn't really know how to use a proractor at all, but now I know.  Its quite easy actually.  To learn how to use a protractor we used this cool site where there was a protractor and u could upload pictures of angles on and measure what the angle was.  Some angles also have names, for example an angle betwen  90° and  0° is called an acute angle.

Jacinda Adern apoligies writing

Jainda Adern has issued a formal apology for past, how the racist police force of New Zealand, and offered scholarships to Pacific students.

Jacinda Adern is apologizing for how the government treated the pacific community.

In the early 70s the New Zealand police started kicking out overstayers in New Zealand, because at the time the government was convinced that there weren't enough jobs for everyone in New Zealand, due to the downturn in the New Zealand economy.  So they decided to target the immigrants to leave New Zealand.

The reason for all this happening is because they believed that the overstayers were taking all the jobs, so the government believed that was what they had to do, so everybody had jobs.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about how to tell the time, I kind of already new how but now i'm a lot more confident with it.  I leant how to use a 24 hour clock and an analogue clock, the differece between a 24 hour clock and an anlogue clock is that a 24 hour clock goes uo to 24 hours for example if it showed 14:30 that means it is actually 2:30. And an anlogue clock only goes up to 12.

Science-The Planets

In science we have been learning about planets in our solar system,  yesterday we were comparing planets, I was comparing Earth and Mercury.

We had to write if there was water on the planet, oxygen, temperature range, diameter, atmosphere and gravity.  We put it in a google slide, side by side and we compared them to each other.  We had to put the symbols for them in too.

Gold! A proud athlete's speech

Yesterday in literacy we wrote a speech as if we were in the Olympics and we'd won a gold medal, this is mine I made it about gymnastics.

Gold Medal speech 2021

I was so overwhelmed when I found out I have won a GOLD medal. It was already so amazing

knowing that I would be participating in the Olympics, it was a dream come true.

But winning a gold medal is a whole other thing!  When I first got to Tokyo I was so

excited to compete and to represent my country.

I’m so happy. I'd like to thank my mum and dad because if it weren't for them I wouldn't be here.

I'd like to thank all my family, friends and supporters for helping and supporting me along this

journey and for making me the person that I am today.I would also like to thank my coach for

helping me accomplish my dreams and for not letting me give up no matter how hard it got.

I appreciate everyone that has helped me so much.  I’m so proud of myself and now I can say

I lived, because I made my family, friends, supporters and most importantly myself very proud.

I have worked so hard for this, since I was a little girl  my dream was to be a famous gymnast,

and here I am at the Olympics, winning a gold medal and saying this speech in front of millions

of people. I’m so glad I took this opportunity and I’m so grateful, this medal has forever changed

my life.

Today in tech (term 3)

Today in tech I had sewing and robotics,  for sewing we started thinking about what design we wanted, in my worksheet I wrote a few different designs. Our bags are all gonna have environmental messages, my one is going to have bees on it to show that the bees are going extinct, and bees are very important, everything has a purpose.  Bees are very important because they help the flower, fruits, veggies and other plants grow .  And we need all that to grow to feed the animals that we eat and also to make our clothes, blankets, fabric and much more.  I like sewing. I think it’s really good that we are learning about these things to be more aware about them.  For robotics we didn’t do much that interested me, we made this robot it was really cool and you could even make it talk.  I guess that was pretty cool.

Star Compass

In science we have been learning about the star compass lately, the star compass is used to navigate the night sky.  A star compass can be used to help memorise the rising and setting points of the
brightness and the most distinctive stars and planets to set direction.  Navigators used to steer their waka toward a star on the horizon.

Literacy

Today in literacy I have been writting a speech as if I was in the Olypics and won a gold medal, I made it about gymnastics because that is one of my favoures in the Olympics.

Science

The past week we have been doing science, in my group weve been learning about the star compass. This is some of my work I've been doing.

Like the Sun, stars will rise in the eastern horizon and will set in the western horizon. Navigators that know the direction and place in which the stars rise and set can use the horizon as a compass. Understanding about night sky is the most important of the mental constructs of knowledge needed for wayfinding. The star compass was came up with to help navigators remember this information.

Last day of tech term 2

Today was the last day of tech, we made cookies. We made cookies before last term, they were really yummy, when we were making them I tried some of the cookie dough, it was really good.  One of my cookies was shaped like a flower, the other was shapeed like a heart and then the other two were shaped like circles.  They had M&M's and choclate chips.  For woodworks we had Mr Ozborn instead of Mr Pledge because Mr Pledge was sick, I finished my frame and colored it in.  I was really happy with it, it looked really cool after I colored it in.  Next term we are doing sewing and something else I can't remember, but I'm excited for sewing.

Today at tech we made creamy pasta, it was yummy but after awhile of eating I felt a bit sick because there was heaps of cheese in it and it was just a bit sickly.

First we filled up a pot up with water and the waited till it boiled, then we got all our veggies and cut them all up.  I got spinach, a bit of mushroom and onion.  Then we cut up our bacon into little bits , we cooked the bacon with butter then we added the drained the pasta then put the bacon bits with it.  We put all our chopped up veggies in and we put in some flavoring stuff in but I forgot what its called.  Then we waited till it thickened up.  Then we took it of the stove and put all our cheese on it, I had a lot of cheese.

Languages

Today in languages I had to pick a language and I chose Spanish, I chose it because I already now Portughese and Spanish is quite similar to Portughese.

Today I learnt...

Buenos dias - good morning

Buenas notches - good night

De nada - your welcome

por favor - please

Today in maths

Today in maths we were lerning about factors and how to find out if numbers are odd or even.

A number can be divided by 3 if you add the digits and the answer can be divided by 3.

Eg. 462  4+6+2= 12 divided by 3 = 4

      229  2+2+9= 13 divided by 3 = (doesn't work) X

Hand hygien

                    Writing_ZT

Washing your hands correctly with soap and water can help stop germs from spreading (like bacteria and viruses), which can cause some diseases.  It's good to wash your hands before and after you eat, after you use the bathroom,   before and after preparing your food, before and after caring for someone sick.

How to wash your hands correctly,

- Wet you hands with clean, running water

- Apply soap and lather your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.

- Rub your hands across all surfaces of your hands, don’t forget the back of your hand and your wrist.

- Rinse your hands under running water and make sure all the soap has come off your hands.

- Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.

Germs are most common to be found on…

  • Knobs/ handles/ switches

  • Bathroom

  • Pets

  • Phone screens

  • Money

  • Keys

  • Shopping trolleys

Shortest day of the year

The shortest day of the year

Today the 21st of June is the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year, today there will only be 7 hours and 49 minutes.

On the June solstice, the nothern Hemisphere leans most towards the sun , giving us longer days and more intense sunlight.  Its the oppositeof the southern Hemisphere, where June marks the start of winter and the shortest day of the year.

literacy writing

Today in literacy we did some writting about a hail storm that we had a few days ago.

      Hail Storm Writing

The other day there was a hail storm, it was very strong, the rain was as heavy as a bowling ball.  Everyone was running outside to go in the hail, everyone was picking the hail up off the ground and making snowballs.  When I went to pick up the hail, it was as cold as ice, that's probably because it was actually ice though.  You could hear the hail falling onto the concrete floor, it sounded like marbles falling from a box, it was really loud.  The ground was cold and frosty, it was as white as paper.  It looked like an ice skating rink, that you could skate on and do cool tricks. Luckily the hail went away after a while, then we could go back outside again.

Walking 7km to Spencer park!

 Walking to Spencer park!

Yesterday we walked 7km to Spencer park. We left at 9:30, first we took a van to where we would start the walk. I forgot what it was called.  But we got to play at the park for a bit while we waited for everyone else to get there, we played on the flying fox. It was fun.

Then we started our walk, some people were running but I just don’t understand how you can run for so long without dying.

It was pretty calm for most of the way, we had to stop every k to do the roll, and everytime we stopped I had something to eat because we didn’t get to stop for morning tea.  While we were walking, me and my friends were singing songs, and being silly, it was fun.  When we were closer to Spencer park, my legs started to get really tired, it felt like they were gonna fall off.  It also started raining while we were walking, the rain wasn’t the worst though, it made the dirt into mud, it was as squishy as a marshmallow. It made my shoes all dirty. We arrived at Spencer park at around 12:00 I was so happy when we got there, I could smell the sausage sizzle, it smelt so good.

But I was upset when we only got one each, it was really yum though!  We got to play in the park and hangout for a few hours, I really enjoyed the walk, it was fun to hangout with friends, I was so tired when I went to bed I almost fell asleep straight away!

Te Reo Maori

Yesterday we did Te Reo Maori and we had to make a slide and we called it Rawhiti Cultaral Narratives, we named each slide one of the classes.  Each slide had a different color, bird and plant.  We had to put all the names of the different colors, birds and plants.

Rongo-ma-tane is red

Papatuanuku is red

Haumia-tike-tike is green

Tane mahuta is green

Tawhirimatea is blue

Maths

Today in Maths there weren't many people because lots of people went to winter sport.

So we all did maths together with Nogo and Sharon, first we did doubling and we started of with 2 and went all the way to 2048 we just doubled up 2 until it went up to 2048.

2 doubled is 4

4 x 2 = 8

8 x 2 = 16... all the way up to 2048

Then we did halving, we started off with 2000 and went down to .05 wich is half of 1.

2000 halved is 1000

1000 halved is 500

500 halved is 250... down to .05

Tech

Today at tech we were suppose to make stir fry chicken but instead we made teriyaki chicken with rice and Mayonnaise.

Because there was someone in my group that didn’t want stir fry so Mrs Lee let him choose what we made because he never likes what we make.

First we ut up the chicken into small bits, then we put in some sauce and sugar to make it actually teriyaki chicken. Then we grabbed the frying pans and cooked our little bits of chicken.

While I cooked the chicken my cooking partner Meg got the broccoli ready since we had to have some vegges, she cut it up and grabbed another pan, she put some water in it and cooked it so she could cook it.  While the rest of the class got there chicken and veggies ready Mrs Lee cooked the rice.

When everything was all cooked and ready we put the rise on the plate first then the chicken, then the mayo and lastly the broccoli. I DON’T like broccoli and it tasted so bad so I only put a Little bit on.  It was really yummy, it was good that I couldn’t taste the broccoli!

I wonder what were making next week.

Matariki

Today in literacy we were learning about Matariki, we did a sheet about it. Matariki is a traditional holiday for the Maori new year which will start in 2021, and it involves 7 stars they all have their own name.

Waipurangi, Urangi, Tupu-a-rangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Waita, Waiti and Matariki.

Generations of Maori have been raised on the seven sisters of Matariki myth, but one academic says many are getting it wrong.  Greek people believe the constellation Pleiades represents seven daughters of Atlas , however when those stars can be seen in our skies it marks the beginning Matariki.

Avonside open night

On Tuesday there was an Avonside open night were we could look around the school and ask questions about what different subbjects and different things we could do.

There was so many different rooms and halls, it was a massive school, there was so many people there, it was a bit overwhelming and I saw a few people that I knew.

When we first went there we went into the hall with everyone else and then they did the kapahaka performance and it was so good they sang really well!  Then they talked for a bit. When they finished talking and stuff we actually went to go have a look at the school, next year when we go to highschool in year 9 we get to do all of the different classes, and then in year 10 we get to choose 8 different subjects I think.

Some classes that I'm really excited for are cooking, clothes/dress designing, art, drama, dance, movie making and what I'm really excited for photography because my mum used to do photography, and it looks really fun, we also get to edit and make it look really cool and unique.  I'm really excited for highschool!

Foot Loose at Avonside

Yesterday a few year 7s and 8s went to Avonside to watch the Avonside girls and Shirley boys Foot Loose performance, and it was so good.

There was a really cool disco ball on the roof and I wanted to take it home so I could hang it up on my roof, but anyways they were so good and they all had funny accents, some of them were wearing cowboy hats and it was so cool.  And at one point they these people kissed and it was so funny, I really enjoyed it and I would like to watch one of there performances again!

My story for literacy

Run the length of New Zealand

Today is a big day, I can hear my heart beating in my chest as loud as lightning.

I’m waiting for the whistle to blow 1,2,3... go!

Everyone starts running so fast it's overwhelming, I’m running so fast it’s weird, it’s like my legs have taken over my body, The wind is slapping my face as I’m running.

Some people have already finished their first lap and I have only done half, I’m losing my breath. It's hard to catch up to all the people in front of me.

My pony tail is swishing and swooshing on my back, I need to stop and have a break and have some water, but then I hear a small whisper in my ear saying “c’mon don’t be lazy, just finish your first lap already”. That small whisper in my ear encourages me to keep going, don’t stop, you CAN do this.

I start running so fast I can’t even feel my feet… 1st lap done, I take a small break and jog for a bit and encourage my friends to keep going, I’m so tired, I forgot what the point of this stupid run is anyway. It's only been like 5 minutes of running and I really can’t be bothered doing this, then I remember why we started this in the first place. I start running fast again, this time I can feel my feet, stomping on the ground like an elephant. And before I know it my 2nd lap is done!

Me and my friends were all encouraging each other to run, we felt like we were running as fast as a cheetah.

Finally I finished all 3 laps. It felt pretty awesome. The first thing I did was run to my bag and have a drink of water. That was fun but I wouldn't do it again.
